Cracking under pressure

NOTCH MILLING MACHINE

Precision notching

ISO 13479 is a test method for determining the resistance to slow crack growth of polyolefin pipes for transporting fluids. It is also known as the notch test and is specifically applicable to pipes with a wall thickness of more than 5 mm. The method measures the time until a pipe breaks under hydrostatic pressure, whereby the pipe has previously been marked with a specific notch.

Features and Functionality

The pipes to be tested are processed using a special notch milling machine in accordance with ISO 13479. This involves making defined V-shaped notches in the outer surface of the pipe.
ISO 13479 is therefore an important standard for assessing the reliability and service life of polyolefin pipes, particularly with regard to their resistance to cracking under pressure.
